What you need to know about credit card scams
There are many ways scammers can try to gain access to your credit card details. And sadly, once they have your credit card number and expiry date or three digit security code on the back, they may go on a spending spree with your money.
To avoid this happening to you, we recommend never handing out your credit card details to anyone who phones you. Ask for their company name and search for the company’s general phone number and credentials (ASIC’s website is useful!) to make sure they’re legitimate before calling them back. Likewise, never reply to any emails with your credit card details or enter them into any online forms that aren’t from reputable websites. You can tell which websites are reputable by checking if they’re protected by a security certificate (look for the little padlock symbol next to the website address at the top of your browser screen and for “https” at the start of the website address).
Another tip is to avoid using any ATM that looks like it’s been tampered with. Scammers can install skimming devices on ATMs capable of stealing your details as you’re taking out cash.
